USD 506 School Board Goals

The Labette County school system is committed to providing a quality education in collaboration with faculty, students, parents and other community members. Faced with decreasing enrollments, soaring costs, shifting populations and changing educational priorities, the system finds providing that quality education and fulfilling that commitment to be an increasingly complex challenge.

Our board of education is responsible for identifying imaginative ways to meet these challenges as we plan for the future. To aid this process, the board has adopted a set of long-range goals it hopes to achieve in the next three to five years. These goals set the direction and guide the work of people within the system. Although all of these goals cannot be attained in any one year, each August the board assesses its progress and adopts objectives aimed at moving these objectives toward completion.

This combination of setting long-range goals, and a set of annual objectives aimed at furthering those goals aids the superintendent and his staff in planning and budgeting for the coming fiscal years.

The board's prioritized long-range goals for the remainder of this decade are as follows

  1. To provide and promote vocational and career/technical (V/C/T) programs that are viable for today's graduates. Labette County has a rich history of vocational education and it our goal to stay current with the needs and interests of today?s students so we can continue offering viable programs. For example in the last ten years we have dropped one program but added two programs. Five years ago we added building trades and health occupations. This past year we dropped auto body, so at this point we are up one program over previous years.
  1. To work continually on providing a positive and safe learning environment. We are reviewing our district crisis plan and will be conducting mock crisis drills at each of our schools. Parents, community patrons and agencies will be informed of the week, in which these drills will occur.

The board has already adopted a policy addressing bullying. We will not tolerate bullying at any level whether it is student to student, teacher to student, or staff member to staff member. Research based bully prevention programs and strategies are being implemented in our K-8 schools.

To establish and maintain effective communications from administrators to staff, to students, to parents, and to our communities. We are in the implementation stage for a new student information management system called Power School. Parents will be given codes at parent-teacher conferences whereby they can access information on their student?s grades, attendance and discipline. We are searching for ways to provide timely communication to our customers.

To focus on continuous improvement of performance resulting in increased student learning. Our board has set the bar high for all staff in expecting excellent performance.  The ultimate goal of excellent performance is improved student learning. Our district encourages people to be continuous learners and provides opportunities for training and ongoing support.

To maintain financial viability. Since our budget is tied to number of students, as the student population goes down so does our budget. This past year the State did make an effort to adequately fund public education. However, it remains to be seen if adequate funding becomes an annual goal for our Legislature. Regardless of the amount of funds we receive it is our responsibility to be good stewards of those funds. The USD 506 staff is very conscientious regarding the expenditure of funds.
